The purpose of a research cover letter is to introduce one’s research proposal to the concerned authority. It is generally sent as an attachment to one’s application for a research job or to support one’s application for research grants and intends to uphold one’s competency claims in the required field. Since a research cover letter serves as a preface to one’s curriculum vitae, it is important to construct such documents with utmost care and precision.

The following are a few pointers that must be kept in mind while composing a research cover letter:

  • Professionalism: The letter must bear an out and out professional, no-nonsense outlook so that it portrays a serious academic image of the researcher and instills confidence in the authority to believe in the prospects of the student.
  • Credentials: The real challenge lies in a tactical presentation of one’s credentials without sounding condescending and arrogant. The achievements and skills attributed to the researcher must be supported with strong evidence.
  • Language: The language of the letter must be live and active. Usage of strong words to convey one’s arguments may prove effective in this case.
  • Acknowledgement: The salutations, greetings and the final line must acknowledge the competence and position of the addressee.
